From the Pastor - Lifestyle: Discipleship

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ!

I want to tell you about one of the most significant activities that I have undertaken in recent years aimed at growing in my faith in Christ.

Last fall I began meeting with two other men in the congregation for an hour and a half on a weekly basis. We spend seventy-five percent of the time reflecting on a guided bible study using the book “Discipleship Essentials” by Greg Ogden. It is a twenty five lesson study that reviews the basics of our knowledge and practice of the Christian faith. The other twenty-five percent of our time is spent sharing what is going on in our lives and then praying for one another and the church. In addition to the commitment to meet with each other, we each have agreed to invite two other people to go through this group experience next year.

2017 Winnie Green Higher Education Scholarship

The Session and the Endowment Ministry Team of the Session would like to invite eligible persons to apply for a grant from the Winnifred Zimmerman Green Higher Education Scholarship Fund. The Scholarship was made possible by a generous gift from the estate of long time member Winnie Green to aid "worthy students of high academic achievement" with their college expenses.

The Session has established guidelines for the awarding of grants. Grants will be awarded each spring; students receiving scholarships shall not be guaranteed renewal of scholarships. Students must re-apply for a new grant each year.

The application deadline for this year is May 1, 2017. Application forms and the full list of applicant guidelines are available from the church office, on the lobby side of Jeanna’s service window, or may be downloaded by clicking here.

Presbyterian Table - Spring/Summer 2017

The Presbyterian Table meets Thursday nights at 6:00 PM, reserving a table at a different restaurant each week. Anyone who wants to eat out is invited to come sit at "the Presbyterian table." This is an informal group open to all with each person being responsible for his or her own expense. We invite you to join us any week for good food, fellowship, and lots of laughter.

SCHEDULE:

Volunteers Needed to Serve Sunday Lunch in March

During the month of March, First Presbyterian is responsible for securing volunteers to serve lunch to the homeless each Sunday at Grace Episcopal Church. You do not have to prepare the meal. If you are willing to open your heart to "the least of these," share a smile, and serve up a warm plate of food, or if you would like more information about this ministry opportunity, please contact David Durrell.

Annual Family Retreat 2017: Faithbook

"Faithbook" will be our Theme for the Family Retreat at Montreat March 3rd-5th!

Facebook is a social media outlet where many people both young and old share their story with their friends and family. As Christians, we all have a faith story that at some point aligns with Jesus's story. Jesus surrounded himself with some amazing people that helped shape his ministry and tell his story after his death and resurrection; that he is the risen Christ.

Women of the Word: All Things New

Ladies, grab a friend and come join us as we explore the anchoring truths of bearing treasures in jars of clay, meeting Christ through a pressing thorn, opening wide our hearts in the midst of hurtful relationships, and what it means to embrace the lost and lonely as ministers of the new covenant. Each of us has a message to proclaim and live by: Because of Jesus the old has gone, the new has come.

Women of the Word returns with Kelly Minter's study of 2 Corinthians in "All Things New." The evening session will begin Monday, February 6, 6:30-8:00 PM. The morning session will begin Tuesday, February 7, 9:15-10:45 AM. In the event that it snows, we will begin February 13 & 14. Please bring your Bible and a pen, and come ready to learn and be blessed.

Fall 2016 Chicken Pie & Baked Spaghetti Sale for Missions

This sale helps us raise extra funds that can go directly and immediately to the local helping agencies we support. It is our hope for this sale to go beyond the membership of the church, so we encourage everyone to invite their neighbors, friends and coworkers to order.

Large chicken pies (which can serve 6-8) are $13.00; orders of 3 or more are $12 each.

Small chicken pies (which can serve 1-2) are $16 for a pack of four pies (must be sold as whole packs).

Baked Spaghetti with Meat Sauce is $13.00 per pan (serves 4-6); orders of 3 or more are $12 each.
