2017 Winnie Green Higher Education Scholarship

The Session and the Endowment Ministry Team of the Session would like to invite eligible persons to apply for a grant from the Winnifred Zimmerman Green Higher Education Scholarship Fund. The Scholarship was made possible by a generous gift from the estate of long time member Winnie Green to aid "worthy students of high academic achievement" with their college expenses.

The Session has established guidelines for the awarding of grants. Grants will be awarded each spring; students receiving scholarships shall not be guaranteed renewal of scholarships. Students must re-apply for a new grant each year.

The application deadline for this year is May 1, 2017. Application forms and the full list of applicant guidelines are available from the church office, on the lobby side of Jeanna’s service window, or may be downloaded by clicking here.

Presbyterian Table - Spring/Summer 2017

The Presbyterian Table meets Thursday nights at 6:00 PM, reserving a table at a different restaurant each week. Anyone who wants to eat out is invited to come sit at "the Presbyterian table." This is an informal group open to all with each person being responsible for his or her own expense. We invite you to join us any week for good food, fellowship, and lots of laughter.

SCHEDULE:

Volunteers Needed to Serve Sunday Lunch in March

During the month of March, First Presbyterian is responsible for securing volunteers to serve lunch to the homeless each Sunday at Grace Episcopal Church. You do not have to prepare the meal. If you are willing to open your heart to "the least of these," share a smile, and serve up a warm plate of food, or if you would like more information about this ministry opportunity, please contact David Durrell.

Annual Family Retreat 2017: Faithbook

"Faithbook" will be our Theme for the Family Retreat at Montreat March 3rd-5th!

Facebook is a social media outlet where many people both young and old share their story with their friends and family. As Christians, we all have a faith story that at some point aligns with Jesus's story. Jesus surrounded himself with some amazing people that helped shape his ministry and tell his story after his death and resurrection; that he is the risen Christ.

Women of the Word: All Things New

Ladies, grab a friend and come join us as we explore the anchoring truths of bearing treasures in jars of clay, meeting Christ through a pressing thorn, opening wide our hearts in the midst of hurtful relationships, and what it means to embrace the lost and lonely as ministers of the new covenant. Each of us has a message to proclaim and live by: Because of Jesus the old has gone, the new has come.

Women of the Word returns with Kelly Minter's study of 2 Corinthians in "All Things New." The evening session will begin Monday, February 6, 6:30-8:00 PM. The morning session will begin Tuesday, February 7, 9:15-10:45 AM. In the event that it snows, we will begin February 13 & 14. Please bring your Bible and a pen, and come ready to learn and be blessed.

Fall 2016 Chicken Pie & Baked Spaghetti Sale for Missions

Small chicken pies (which can serve 1-2) are $16 for a pack of four pies (must be sold as whole packs).

Baked Spaghetti with Meat Sauce is $13.00 per pan (serves 4-6); orders of 3 or more are $12 each.

Fall 2016 Mission Trips

The Faith In Action Planning Team is looking for people interested in participating in one of two mission trips in the fall.

The first would be a weekend trip to West Virginia working with the West Virginia Ministry of Advocacy and Workcamps. A project capable of being completed over a weekend would be chosen, and all ages would be invited to participate. A date and the cost has not been set, but the trip would be one weekend mutually agreed upon and the cost would be food and travel. If you would be interested, please contact Jeff Davis or Ann Kiefer.

We are also looking for people interested in the participating in the 9th Adult trip to the Dominican Republic. The dates are Saturday, October 15 - Friday, October 21, 2016. More than 25 adults and 60 youth have participated in one of our mission trips to the Dominican Republic. Anyone who has gone will tell you that this is a life-changing and life-affirming trip.

The ground fee for this year's trip is $1095. This price includes excellent accommodations, wonderful food, ground transportation, etc. Air fare is running about $600. The projects that we work on are many and varied. While there usually is a home to construct, help is also needed in the dental clinic, the women's co-op, the physical therapy clinic, or a host of other places. You do not have to be able to lift concrete block or have any construction experience to have a wonderful and meaningful experience. Age is not a factor either. Our church has the distinction of bringing the oldest person to Mission Emanuel (George Wetherill). If you are interested in this trip, please contact Pastor Lee or Byron Oswald as soon as possible.

Worship Service Information

One of the recommendations of our Worship Learning Team over the summer was to consider ways to bring a fresh look to the 11 a.m. service at the same time maintaining the familiar and beloved traditional style. Over the month of August, we have done a few things to help us in this task.
